Good Food Store of the Month

A winemaker and a foodie had a dream: Kallista General Store

Meet Josephine and Liz the awesome women behind the gastronomic changes at the Kallista General Store. Between them they are making sure Kallista folks are well catered for.

They make the hot food and cakes (gluten free choices are available) and support local food artisans wherever possible. From bretzels to beer and beyond.

The lovely old building was once a dance hall in Elsternwick which was moved to its current home around 1904. The local school provides seedlings for purchase and the community drops off excess food you can take for a donation to the CFA. Donated food sometimes ends up as chutney or a boutique beer made from quinces.

You can recycle stuff and grab a boomerang bag for your goodies plus a rich organic coffee to take with you (remember to bring your own cup).

The store abounds with gourmet food and ideas for your evening meal. They make sure they cater for all the community by providing good food at good value. They love it when customers come in to see what is new. I took away a recipe and the ingredients for my dinner plus a beautiful red to sip alongside it. Regular wine tastings are held on Friday at 4pm.  This is one of a few great General Stores popping up in the Hills and THFF love it. Watch this space to hear more but do not drive past this gem again.

Pasta with Chickpeas and Anchovies

  • 1 pack of pasta
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic chopped or crushed
  • 8 anchovies tinned or marinated, chopped

  1. Cook the pasta according to the pack, until al dente.  When cooked drain and return to pot.
  2. While pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes or until onion if translucent.
  3. Drain chickpeas, reserving liquid.  Add chickpeas and chopped anchovies to pan and cook, stirring, for a further 5 minutes, or longer if necessary to heat chickpeas through.
  4. Add 1/2 a cup of chickpea liquid into pan and continue to cook and stir until heated through.
  5. Add chickpea mixture to cooked pasta and stir through.

Then serve!
